What types of student loans can be consolidated?

There are different types of federal student loans that can be consolidated. There is the Federal Family Education Loan Program, which is also known as the FFEL Program. In addition there is the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, which is also known as the Direct Loan. Most people probably refer to these types of loans as Stafford Loans that are for students and PLUS Loans that are for parents of students. For a more specific list of federal student loans that can be consolidated see below.

In addition to the federal student loans listed above that can be consolidated under a federal government program there are other types of loans students or parents may take out that can not be consolidated as a part of a federal loans consolidation. Those loans that can not be included in a federal loan consolidation are known as private loans. That does not mean private loans can not be consolidated, as they can, they just can’t be combined or consolidated into a federal loan consolidation.
